What is Apologetics?

Apologetics is a word that is not often used in our churches today, but it’s a discipline of the faith that has been around since the beginning of the Church. “Apologetics” is a word taken from 1 Peter 3:15, which says ” 1 Peter 3:15: “but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect” The Greek word for “defense” is apologia, which means to give a defense or reason for why one believes what they do.

Apologetics is the discipline of giving reasons why the Christian faith is true, and grounding people in the truth of God’s Word. God has not called us to blind faith, simply hoping and wishing what we believe is true, but has provided ample reasons to believe His Word is true. Biblical truth has come under heavy fire in our culture today, and apologetics is vital to standing up to the deception and falsehood and defending the faith that was once delivered (Jude 1:3).
